Description:

The Cold War Museum® is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to education, preservation, and research on the global, ideological, and political confrontations between East and West from the end of World War II to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The Museum is located at Vint Hill, the former top secret signals intelligence base just outside of Gainesville, Virginia, in one of the original Vint Hill Farm Station buildings used during the Cold War by the US Army, the National Security Agency, and the Central Intelligence Agency to intercept and interpret coded messages. Our collections are particularly strong on signals intelligence, image intelligence, aerial surveillance, civil defense, Berlin, the East German secret police (STASI), the Cuban Missile Crisis, and events such as the U.S.S. Pueblo and Liberty incidents.

Cold War Interests:

The Museum educates about the Cold War principally via our artifact exhibits, which are available to the public during our regular hours and by special appointment for large tours and out-of-town visitors, and via our website at www.coldwar.org.  We also organize special presentations on particular Cold War topics, such as the Cuban Missile Crisis symposium presented in cooperation with George Mason University, as well as loaning some of our artifacts on request to other museums and libraries for temporary exhibits on Cold War topics. We have close relationships with various organizations and individuals who served professionally during the Cold War, particularly in intelligence and the military, and are called upon to help educate the staff of such organizations on Cold War history. The Museum also publishes a newsletter to update readers on recent activities.
